Metal-free packaging uses pumps, sprayers, droppers and other dispensers built entirely from plastic, with no metal spring or ball in the product path. Brands choose it to keep metal out of contact with the formula and to make closures designed for recyclability. Below are answers to 20 common questions brand owners, product developers and buyers ask.

The basics

1. What is a metal-free pump?

It is a pump whose return mechanism is made from plastic instead of a metal spring. Every part that touches the formula is plastic. For a full explanation, read what is a metal-free pump.

2. Where is the metal in a conventional pump?

Most conventional pumps and triggers use a small metal spring inside the pump chamber, and some also use a metal ball as a valve. Both sit in the product path.

3. Is "metal-free" the same as "all-plastic"?

Yes, in practice. Both mean the dispenser has no metal components. The terms are used interchangeably.

4. Is all-plastic the same as mono-material?

No. All-plastic means no metal. Mono-material means the parts come from a single resin family. A pump can be all-plastic yet mix PP and PE. See all-plastic vs mono-material packaging.

Formats and options

5. Which formats come in metal-free versions?

Lotion pumps, treatment pumps, foamer pumps, trigger sprayers, fine mist sprayers, droppers, airless bottles and deodorant packaging are all available in all-plastic designs.

Format Best for APG example Notable details

Dropper Oils and serums Infinity Dropper All-plastic
Deodorant Stick deodorant Infinity Deodorant PP mono material; 30, 50, 75ml

6. What dosages are available?

It depends on the format. In our range, the Infinity V2 Lotion Pump dispenses 1.5cc, the clip-lock lotion pump 3.5cc, and the Infinity HV Fine Mist 0.19cc, 0.2cc or 0.5cc.

7. Which neck finishes are common?

28/410 and 28/400 are common for triggers. Fine mist sprayers often use 20/410, 24/410 or 28/410. Our neck finish and dosage guide explains how to read and measure them.

8. Can metal-free pumps be customized?

Yes. Several of our pumps and sprayers can be configured in multiple color combinations, and the Eternal Pump airless bottle offers decoration options.

Recycling and claims

9. Why does metal make pumps hard to recycle?

A metal spring is small, embedded in plastic and hard to separate in recycling facilities. Removing it makes the pump easier to process with the rest of the package.

10. What does APR recognition mean?

The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) reviews packaging against its design guidance for recyclability. APR recognition shows a product has been evaluated under that program.

11. Can I say my pump is recyclable?

Use accurate wording based on the FTC Green Guides, such as "designed for recyclability" or "recyclable where facilities accept it." Avoid absolute claims that suggest every recycling program accepts it.

12. Is a metal-free pump automatically mono-material?

No. Only call a product mono-material if it is made from a single resin family, such as our PP mono material airless bottle or Infinity V2 Lotion Pump.

Performance and testing

13. Do metal-free pumps perform as well as metal-spring pumps?

All-plastic pumps are engineered to dispense consistently and return reliably. Performance always depends on the formula, so test with your own product.

14. How do I test a metal-free pump with my formula?

Fill samples, check priming, output and recovery, then store at room and elevated temperatures and check for leaks or changes. See how to test a metal-free pump with your formula.

15. Can metal-free pumps handle e-commerce shipping?

Some are built for it. The Infinity Lotion Pump, Infinity Trigger Sprayer and Infinity HV Fine Mist are e-commerce capable. Always run your own leak and drop checks.

16. Will I need new filling equipment?

Usually not. The Infinity Trigger Sprayer, for example, needs no custom filling equipment. Run a short line trial to confirm capping and handling.
